TESLA project results: Energy savings up to 36 millions of kWh and decrease in GHG emissions.

Today, 26th February 2016, the results of the European project TESLA, leaded by Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España, have been presented.

Openning

The TESLA project has presented its results during the workshop “Energy efficiency in the European agro-food industry”, hosted last Friday 26th February in Madrid. At the beginning of the workshop Ángel Villafranca, president of Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España, highlighted the importance of the energy savings achieved by TESLA project, which will reach 36 millions of kWh of primary energy at the end of the year, and will also decrease the GHG emissions in 4.300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

In this project, coordinated by Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España and executed from March 2013 to March 2016, a total number of 110 cooperatives have participated directly in its tasks. These cooperatives are located in Italy, France, Portugal and Spain and belong to the sectors of wineries, olive oil mills, fruit and vegetables processing plants, and animal feed factories.

Representatives from TESLA partners

As a consequence of the energy audits carried out in each cooperative, a lot of these agro-food industries have implemented important improvements in their facilities. The sum of these investments has reached 10,8 million Euros. Thus, taking into account the funding received from the European Commission for the project, it has a rate of return of 7 Euros invested per 1 Euro received.

Besides that, the project has also released other results that can be used -for free- by many other agro-food industries. All the documents and tools developed by TESLA are available in the webpage of the project: www.teslaproject.org. For example, the sector specific Handbooks have been issued for managers of agro-food industries to get them familiar with the successful measures implemented in similar facilities. In the other hand, the Best practices for improving energy efficiency have been issued addressed to experts in design and agro-food industrial engineering. Both, the sector specific Handbooks and the Best practices for improving energy efficiency addressed to each sector, are aiming at improving the efficiency of the agro-food processes by the implementation of well-known technologies and also by promising ones.

Attendants

Additionally, the project has designed the “TESLA tool”, which is free software developed for the agro-food industries of wineries, olive oil mills, fruit and vegetables processing plants, and animal feed factories. This software has been created for self-assessing energy behaviour of each agro-industry. Since the software is adjusted to the specific processes and equipments of these agro-food industries, it allows designing tailor-made plans for improving energy efficiency by simulating the implementation of measures. The working group of research of COPA COGECA was held the past 26th of January.  COPA COGECA is the organization that brings together the main association of farmers and cooperatives in Europe. Coordinator of TESLA project, Juan Sagarna, presented the main results so far. This project is very relevant for the organization since it is the first time that several members on COPA COGECA lead such a important project focusing the improvements of industrial facilities at European scale. In the group, there were represented organizations from Ireland, Britain, Italy, Poland, Greece, Austria, Finland, Netherlands and Spain.

The attendants were interested not only in the technical aspects of the project, focusing wineries, olive oil mills, fruit and vegetables plants and animal feed plants, otherwise they appreciated  the involvement of certain key actors, such as European leaders companies like Siemens or ABB.  In addition, since some of them associates cooperative business in the focused sectors they  were informed that the TESLA tool was completely free downloadable and able to assess the energy behavior and WPRES1help them to quantify potential savings with the studied measures.
